The Krugerrand was coined for the first time in 1967 and receives its name because the obverse shows the face of Paul Kruger (Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, 1825-1904), the president of the old Republic of South Africa (Transvaal).

According to the South African constitution the Krugerrand has legal course in South Africa. When not having a nominal value the price of this currency of 22 carats fixing pays attention every day to London and it becomes Rands later, the Krugerrand was even so not created to be used like money but like an instrument to commercialize South African gold.

The legal course that was granted to him to this gold currency allowed the citizens of the United States, during the prohibition of the deprived gold property (1934 to 1974), “to buy? gold of legal form. From 1986 to 1999 all import of South African products to Europe was prohibited in this way and also the import of the Krugerrand which substantially harmed the value of this currency in comparison with others.

The Krugerrand was the first gold currency in containing one ounce of fine gold exactly, and was created like vehicle for the deprived gold property. On the other art, the first gold currencies, like the gold Sovereign, had a value recorded in their face, that throughout its history has often diverged of the value of its gold content.

At the outset, it was sold with an exorbitant premium of the five percent on the base of the value of gold, but by the high amount of currencies that made it lowered until - 1% - 3%.

Lately the boom of the gold market has caused that this traditional currency has become more expensive even than the Philharmonic one from gold Vienna. More or less half of the gold currencies of investment never made is Krugerrands.

The Krugerrand is coined with a gold alloy and receives giving an aspect him more reddish than the alloyed gold currencies with silver. The alloys are used to make harder and lasting currencies of gold, being able to resist scratches and dents during their manipulation. Altogether, 54.5 million currencies have been sold which has contributed substantially to its success. The Krugerrand only takes place in gold, do not exist Krugerrands of silver. The obverse represents the bust of Paul Kruger and the reverse one represents a South African antelope (springbok), one of the national symbols of South Africa. The name “South Africa? and the gold content are written as much in afrikaans as in English. In 1980, other three sizes were introduced, offering itself of means, quarter, and tenth of ounce of weight.
